- Plaque Text: William H. Scherer, "Billy," graduated from Naperville High in 1936. He was the grandson of Christian Scherer, founder of Scherer Hardware Store in downtown Naperville. Billy captained his team in high school and went on to college at IIT, where he again earned the lead role as captain of his basketball team. Billy became a civil engineer and served in the army air corps during WWII. Since he was 10 years old, he loved sports and what they represented. He had the highest regard for being the very best he could be at whatever he did, especially sports because they were his first love back then. "There will always be someone better than you," he told his children. "You just be the best you can be!" It is with this spirit that, each year, a student from Naperville Central will receive an athletic scholarship in the name of William H. Scherer.
