ARTISTS LOOK TO EXHIBIT WORK FOR CENTURY WALK'S NEXT PHASE

Work on the second phase of the Century Walk likely will begin soon, with artists planning demonstrations and exhibits of this year's projects.

Century Walk administrator Michael Trippiedi said Tuesday that he is working with the Naperville Art League to display the artists' projects, hopefully later this month.

Also, Kathleen Farrell and Kathleen Scarboro (dubbed "the Kathleens" during a recent Century Walk Committee meeting) are planning a demonstration and slide show for 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 15, in the East Training Room of the Naperville Municipal Center, 400 S. Eagle St. The Kathleens will be creating a mural to be placed on the east wall of the Hozhoni Native American Art store.

"There is limited space, only about 20 seats, so it's not necessarily a call for the public," Trippiedi said.

"They are looking for artists to help fabricate the mosaic."

Artists interested in learning more about or helping with the mosaic, which will depict farm life in Naperville, may call Trippiedi at (630) 778-6163.

"The purpose of that demonstration is really to call on any local artists who would be interested," Trippiedi said.

"They'd like someone who has had a little bit of experience.

It's up to the Kathleens as to who they will select."

Other projects slated for Phase II of the Century Walk also are in the works, including a mural to be painted by Chicago artists Hector Duarte and Mariah deForest on the east side of The Lantern restaurant building, at the southwest corner of Washington Street and Chicago Avenue.

Plans for that project have changed slightly in the past few weeks, Trippiedi said.

"Mariah and Hector have retooled their mural," he said.

"It's still subject matter of transportation, but deals with a lot more elements."

Originally, various elements dealing with transportation were sketched in a more linear fashion.

The retooled design has elements arranged in a more circular fashion, Trippiedi said.

"There's a small skyline of Chicago up at the top of the mural and from the left, a train heads toward Naperville, forming the left part of the circle," Trippiedi said.

"On the right, we have cars going into the city.  Then we have the DuPage West Branch River through the center and we have some airplanes and other elements that are going to be in it.

I think they are going to show early car dealers, and they are going to show one of the bridges in downtown Naperville.

"It' a real interesting vantage point and perspective," he added.

"It's entirely different from the perspective they showed before."

DeForest and Duarte currently are in the process of preparing renderings of the mural, Trippiedi said.

Meanwhile, Century Walk organizers are working with city officials to secure permits for the placement of a sculpture to be created by Jack Holme.

The sculpture is to be located near the southeast corner of the Jefferson Hill Tea Shops on Jefferson Avenue.

Models of all three pieces could soon be on display at the Naperville Art League, 508 Center St. Trippiedi said he is trying to get permission from the league to display the works starting July 20.

"I hope to have all the pieces there on display, not only for that day but maybe for a few weeks," he said.
